Jun. 30--For years, Mike Hellmund had wanted to teach.

Then, earlier this month, the veteran toy maker was laid off from work in Orlando. He went to the Orange County school district.

"I said, 'You know what? I think I'm going to do it,' " said Hellmund, 44, who has spent the past 11 years developing science toys such as model rockets and child-friendly microscopes for companies spanning the globe.

Two weeks ago, he applied for a job teaching science or language arts.

"It's a little terrifying. It's exciting. I mean, this is something totally different," he said.

School district officials say a number of Central Florida residents who, like Hellmund, have been left without work thanks to the economic fallout after Sept. 11 are seeking jobs as teachers.
