Aug. 7--The new board of the Tourism Council of Thailand has pledged to push ahead with ongoing projects to maximise the competitiveness of local tourism operators, according to Vichit Na Ranong who has been re-elected as chairman for a second term until 2006.

As liberalisation of the services sector is a feature of many present and future free-trade agreements being negotiated by Thailand, the country's tourism industry needs to be "armed with quality weapons in the worldwide competition", the Phuket hotelier said yesterday.

The council plans to draft recommendations on how various sectors in the tourism ...
