Jul. 4--Thai shrimp farmers are increasingly recognising the value of intensive marine shrimp farming and the development of a code of conduct to eliminate chemical residues, easing foreign buyers' fears of contamination.
The expansion of shrimp farming under the code will cover 1,000 farms this year and all 15,000 farms in the next five years, according to the Fisheries Department, a supporter of the new programme.
In 1998, local shrimp associations, in co-operation with the department, adopted a sustainable marine shrimp culture, an environmentally acceptable process that yields high quality, hygienic products.
