Jul. 30--The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad has finalized its acquisition of another Midwestern rail line, the company announced Monday.
Purchasing that carrier, I&M Rail Link, roughly triples DM&E's track length and gives the railroad access to five states and three major markets -- the Twin Cities, Chicago and Kansas City.
The acquisition potentially could reduce the amount of rail traffic, including future coal traffic, through Rochester, local officials say. For that reason, some Rochester observers have applauded the DM&E's plans since February, when the company announced its intent to buy the IMRL.
