Aug. 8--A family-owned South Florida call center is scrambling to find new positions in the company for as much as a third of its work force, after losing its biggest account to an offshore competitor.
The Answer Group, an 8-year-old Fort Lauderdale company, said Wednesday it was notified last week by Hewlett-Packard Co. that its five-year relationship with Compaq Computer Inc., which was acquired by HP in May, will be terminated because the company's new policy is to move all its tech support operations offshore.
Kenny Stephens, marketing manager for HP support services, said the combined companies have had to consolidate their call centers to make the merger successful. But he denied that the company will shift all its business overseas.
"We have a very complicated process for vendor selection that has been going on for several months, but we plan to maintain call centers in both the U.S. and Canada," he said.
