Aug. 5--Among 18 countries surveyed, Thailand had the largest number of viewers for the World Cup soccer tournament.

Thailand accounted for 269 million viewers out of almost 1.5 billion in those countries, according to Nielsen Media Research, part of the US-based VNU Media Measurement & Information Group.

Although South Korea finished second in the viewing stakes, it was the clear ratings winner for the tournament, capturing an average 16 percent of the potential audience for all matches. South Korea's interest in the World Cup was driven both by its status as a host nation and by the success of its national team.
