Aug. 5--One of the most interesting figures in a major report on Japanese outbound travel released last week indicates significant growth in the number of people saying they "dislike foreign travel".
The report, by a giant tour wholesaler, the Japan Travel Bureau, says that 21.3 percent of JTB clients who travelled abroad in 2001 said they disliked it, 6 percent more than those surveyed in 2000. It is also the highest percentage to have responded thus since 1995. The report did not analyse the reason for this.
However, other responses to a question on "factors hindering overseas travel" did indicate higher levels of concern about travel costs, a dislike of foreign food, language concerns and discomfort with "foreign customs, like tipping".
