ANTWERP, Belgium _ Scientists are turning to some of the newest drugs in AIDS treatment in their quest for a novel method of prevention known as microbicides: spermicide-like gels that could help women protect themselves against AIDS.

Some of the compounds are so experimental that they have no names, just numbers. One, known as tenofovir, was approved last year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

While this area of research is still quite preliminary, with numerous studies in test tubes, animals and small groups of people planned before large-scale experiments can begin, it was one of the most promising fields of research examined at an international conference of microbicide researchers, policy-makers and advocates held in Belgium in May.
