DALLAS _ Public health workers who would be the first to respond to a bioterrorist attack should receive smallpox vaccinations, a government advisory panel decided Thursday.
If adopted, such a policy could mean 10,000 to 20,000 Americans would be vaccinated as soon as this fall. States would decide who their emergency responders would be.
Routine smallpox vaccinations in the United States ended in 1971, when the virus ceased to threaten North America.
The proposal does not recommend resuming widespread vaccinations. Smallpox vaccine contains a live virus, so occasionally side effects can be severe.
