AIDS clinical trials must include social and outreach services if they hope to broaden minority participation.

Although studies show that race is an important consideration in the analysis of clinical trial results, minority participation - particularly that of blacks and Hispanics - is disproportionately low.

Wafaa El-Sadr of Harlem Hospital Center and Linnea Capps of Columbia University, New York, consider the obstacles to minority participation in the February 19, 1992, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
