Airlines practically can't give away tickets for Sept. 11 _ but Spirit Airlines is trying.
The Miramar, Fla.-based discount carrier said late Tuesday it will not charge airfare for any seat on any flight that day.
From Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Spirit offers 16 daily nonstop flights to Atlantic City, N.J.; New York's LaGuardia; Chicago; Detroit, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, with connections to other cities.
Spirit Chairman Ned Homfeld said the free seats are a token of the airline's appreciation.
"It is a way of thanking our customers who have been extremely loyal to us," Homfeld said. "After 9-11, without the customer support we received, we wouldn't have made it through."
Many major airlines, still struggling to regain traffic since the terrorist attacks, are planning to scale back their flights Sept. 11, anticipating low bookings.
