Aug. 5--ROCKINGHAM, Vt. -- The last surviving piece of the original 1791 Bellows Falls Canal discovered intact under the former TRL paper mill complex is in danger, according to Rockingham Development Director Richard Ewald.

Selectmen approved Ewald's proposal to protect and improve the site for historical purposes and the public during the board's meeting Tuesday night.

The Bellows Falls Canal once lifted boats nearly 50 feet with a series of eight locks so that river traffic could get around the half mile Connecticut River gorge known as the Great Falls. The upper portion of the Canal, listed in the Bellows Falls ...
