PHILADELPHIA _ Council Rock schoolteachers, already the state's top-paid public educators, went on strike Tuesday over pay and benefit issues, keeping 12,500 students from starting classes in a labor dispute being keenly watched by teachers, school boards and taxpayers around the region.

There were signs of strain in the community _ over teacher pay levels and over the strike itself.

About 750 parents and students held a rally Tuesday night to urge both sides to resume talks and open school.

Though the rally was not called to support either side, the mood was critical of the teachers. Signs read "Greedy Teachers . . . Get Back to Work," and "Overpaid Babysitters."
