Sep. 6--Asean leaders should settle a conflict of interest over a request by Indonesia and the Philippines to delay their import tariff reductions on sugar, otherwise the credibility of the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) will be affected, according to a senior Thai official.
Indonesia and the Philippines, where sugar is a political commodity, last year asked other Asean members to postpone until 2010 a reduction in the sugar tariff to 0-5 percent, which was originally scheduled for next year.
Sugar and rice are classified as highly sensitive under the 10 Asean members' tariff reduction plan.
