Sep. 20--In the offices of Wisconsin Connections Academy, the state's first virtual elementary school, each student is represented by a colored pin stuck in a poster-size map of the state. There are yellow pins for Michelle Mueller's algebra students, green pins for Pam Buettner's second- and third-graders, and white pins for Lynn Rhodes' kindergartners.
In a couple of weeks, the teachers at the K-8 school hope to have snapshots of their students tacked to the bulletin boards, too. But even that will go only so far in their effort to get to know the boys and girls who come from 85 different school districts across Wisconsin.
At the same time, the Appleton-based virtual school -- where all of the student-teacher contact is either online or over the phone -- has other challenges.
