Aug. 4--Prized by cooks all over the world for its unique flavour and aroma, Thai Hom Mali, or jasmine rice, has become an extremely profitable export for Thailand, earning the kingdom billions of baht a year in export sales.

The strain commands a premium price, much like basmati rice from Pakistan and India, which features its own subtle characteristics.

The famous Hom Mali 105 strain thrives on plateaus with sandy soil, which is why it is best grown in selected provinces in Thailand's Northeast.

Given the economic significance of the grain, it came as a shock to the industry that rice samples brought back from Cambodia had been found to have the same genetic fingerprint as Hom ...
