Aug. 4--Recent increases in oil prices resulted in inflation in July reaching its highest monthly level in five years, the Commerce Ministry said yesterday.
Headline inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 3.1 percent year-on-year in July, compared with 3.0 percent in June and 1.8 percent in July 2003. Since 1999, inflation has averaged around 2 percent.
Karun Kittisataporn, the ministry's permanent secretary, attributed the surge in inflation mainly to non-food factors, with world oil prices now US$44 a barrel.
