Oct. 7--More Florida schools this year are using cash, which was received as a reward for boosting student achievement, to supplement teacher salaries that are among the lowest in the country, local school officials say.
The state Department of Education recently gave 236 Central Florida schools nearly $22 million for earning A's or boosting their grades on the state's annual report card.
The money can go toward such things as employee bonuses, hiring temporary help and buying new equipment and supplies. As districts enter another tight budget year and teacher salaries remain thousands of dollars lower than those in some surrounding states, however, more and more…
