Oct. 4--Cetelem (Thailand), a consumer finance firm, says it plans to shift its focus to credit-card service, away from the hire-purchase segment, starting next year.
"We see an opportunity in the credit-card business in Thailand. Only four million credit cards have been issued to a population of 60 million," said chief executive Pedro Rodriguez.
In contrast, in Taiwan and South Korea, the other two Asian countries in which the company operates, the number of cards averaged three to five per head of population. Moreover, Thailand's retail business was still growing.
