Oct. 3--There seems to be a preponderance of bad news in the financial and business pages of newspapers. Declining economies, falling markets, war! With all this doom and gloom, perhaps reading business books might be a pleasant distraction and allow one to take a step back and learn from the experiences of others.
A visit to Asia Books the other day was illuminating. The new arrivals in the business section had titles along the lines of: How Winners Sell, Building Strong Brands, Conquer the Crash. Probably the most provocative feature of these books is the titles.
I must own up to be somewhat cynical about these "knowledge" publications. Usually, the entire thesis is available in the first chapter and the rest of the book is an exercise in justifying the 1,000-baht-plus price through rambling, usually theoretical, assertions. The odd exception can be found, but is a rarity.
