Oct. 2--German chemical giant BASF AG plans to build an additional propylene oxide plant in Southeast Asia, possibly in Thailand, as part of its programme to invest US$4.5 billion in the Asia-Pacific region by 2005.
BASF has previously invested $2.1 billion in the region, including a 50:50 joint venture with Shell to spend $500 million on manufacturing facilities in Singapore. The plant, which makes styrene monomer and propylene oxide, is claimed to be the largest of its kind in Asia.
BASF, Huntsman Corp of the United States and Chinese partners plan to spend $1 billion on a similar plant in Shanghai.
