NYSE stocks edged slightly higher Friday as a quiet session capped a decent week for stocks.
The Dow and S&P 500 each rose 0.1%. The small-cap S&P 600 inched up 0.3%. For the week, the Dow climbed 1.8%, the S&P 500 1.4%, the S&P 600 2.2%.
Crude oil rose 2.5% to $43.80 a barrel, good for a 21-year high. San Juan Basin Royalty Trust rose 0.75 to 28.29 in brisk trade. The Texas-based firm owns oil and gas properties in the San Juan Basin of northwestern New Mexico.
The Steel-Specialty Alloys was again the market's top performer. Carpenter Technology continued to lead that group. The producer of stainless steel, special alloys, ceramics and other materials notched its sixth straight gain, up 2.28 to 43.10 on 3 1/2 times its average volume. The stock showed shades of 2003 megawinner Schnitzer Steel, romping 32% for the week.
