It's not easy to wow consumers when you make products that have been around for decades. Still, the folks at Chattem Inc. are giving it their best shot.
The company makes and markets over-the-counter health care products and beauty aids, including venerable brands such as Gold Bond medicated skin care products and Selsun Blue shampoos and conditioner.
Its products, while not fast growers, are considered "destination" items consumers seek to fix certain problems, says analyst Liam Burke of Ferris, Baker Watts Inc.
She credits Chattem President Alec Taylor with doing a good job driving incremental sales by coming up with a steady flow of useful line extensions.
The company launched five products last fiscal year, which ended in November. It launched seven this year.
New product sales helped push Chattem's revenue to $70.1 million during the fiscal second quarter, which ended May 31. That was up 10% from the prior year. Earnings rose 37% to 52 cents a share.
