Byline: KEN SPENCER BROWN
Three of the big four server makers are set to announce products powered by Intel's new Nocona chips, debuts that could further erode sales of pricy "big-iron" systems.
It also may help Intel regain ground it's lost to archrival Advanced Micro Devices, which has offered a similar chip for a year.
IBM is unveiling eight servers in its mass-market xSeries, the line's biggest launch since Big Blue created it four years ago.
Dell, the only big vendor still not using AMD, will round out its PowerEdge line with three new Nocona-based machines.
And Hewlett-Packard will release five new dual-processor servers in its ProLiant line.
Analysts say Intel's chip will appeal to customers who've wanted to upgrade their Intel-based systems but were afraid of jumping to AMD.
