Intel product problems boost rival
The world's No. 1 chipmaker has told computer makers that it's not going to meet its year-end target for delivering a high-speed chip for desktop PCs, and expects to ship a 4GHz chip in Q1. Bad news for Intel was good for rival chipmaker AMD, whose stock rose 5.5% to 12.49. Intel CEO Craig Barrett recently warned employees mistakes would not be tolerated following earlier reported production problems.
SMIC Q2 reverses year-ago loss
China's No. 1 chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International made 9 cents a share, reversing a year-ago loss on nearly tripled sales of $221 mil. Shares of SMIC, which had a $1.8 bil IPO in March, rose 4% to 10.84. But analysts raised concerns semiconductor demand has peaked.
