Except for the Rev. Al Sharpton's angry ad lib and a few uncooperative balloons, the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston went off last week without a hitch.
Which surprised no one more than the Democrats themselves.
"I've never seen the Democratic Party so disciplined and so focused," said Democratic strategist Morris Reid, managing director of Westin Rinehart public relations. "They were like Republicans."
With all their talk of security and strength, they even sounded like Republicans. This is definitely not your father's Democratic Party, at least on TV.

"This is a Democratic Party that for 30 years has been actively anti-war, almost inviting suspicion of their ability to conduct American security policy," said Cal Jillson, professor of political science at Southern Methodist University, who was in Boston as an observer.
