Nov. 12--The Bay Area and California earned high marks on a list of top technology achievements Monday -- and not just because of work done in the state's research labs.
Among the 50 top science and technology leaders named by Scientific American magazine as the most noteworthy of 2002, one-third were from California. The list honors not just scientists, but also companies, business people and policy leaders who help turn discoveries to practical use in a dozen areas, from transportation to medical diagnostics, manufacturing, energy and the environment.
Honorees included Bay Area researchers working on the next generation of computers and a legislator who fought to make the state the first in the nation to limit the emission of greenhouse gases from tailpipes. The aim, according to those behind the award, was to…
