KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Add another poke or two with a needle that your baby or toddler ought to be getting this fall: This one is a flu shot.
For the first time this year, federal health authorities are encouraging the shots for healthy children 6 months to 23 months old.
And although mass flu vaccination programs such as those offered by the Red Cross, supermarkets and drug stores will not be giving shots to tots, many pediatricians and clinics will.
"I think it's a good idea," said Kurt Metzl, a Kansas City pediatrician. "We're going to go ahead and offer it. We had a lot of flu in the community last year, and a lot of kids got sick."
