Michael Vick recanted accusations he made last week that the Chicago Bears had tried to go after his knees in the Falcons-Bears game last Sunday.
Good. Because recanting was probably the smartest thing he's done in his young career.
The second-year quarterback, Atlanta's franchise player of the future, said he initially made the accusations because he was trying to protect himself.
He actually protected himself when he dropped the accusations.
Going after an opponent's knees is a cardinal sin in football. Nobody would dare let any other player know if he even seriously thought about doing it. It is the dirtiest of dirty things to do on a football field.
Had the accusations not been withdrawn, Vick would have been looked at as a young prima donna who pins a bad rep on teams he can't beat. That could get him unwanted attention in future games.
