Their starting pitcher a near-casualty of April and their most powerful offensive presence a singles hitter turned lefthanded slasher, the Cardinals swept the defending world champion Arizona Diamondbacks from this National League Division Series with a nerveless 6-3 win. Preserved by a four-man relief effort and a one-hop fifth-inning heave to home plate from left fielder Albert Pujols, the win pushes the Cardinals into the National League Championship Series for the third time in seven seasons.
The Cardinals await the winner of the division series between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco. The series will begin next Wednesday at a site to be determined by their next opponent.
