SAN JOSE _ While with the Montreal Expos a few years ago, Felipe Alou stumbled across some stray papers in the clubhouse. The Los Angeles Dodgers left town and accidentally left their scouting report behind.
"As it turned out, their manager at that time thought I was crazy. The scouting report said to expect anything at any time," Alou said Friday. "I don't seem aggressive, but when it comes to managing I am."
When the Giants formally introduced Alou as their next manager in a news conference at Pacific Bell Park, he vowed to stick to his high-octane approach. Alou, who turns 68 in May, noted that he is too old to change now anyhow.
"I'm not afraid to make mistakes," he said. "I've always felt if I'm going to go down, I'm going to go down on my own terms."
Alou will do things on his own terms but also with some familiar faces. He said pitching coach Dave Righetti and bench coach Ron Wotus would return to the Giants' staff, with Joe Lefebvre moving from first-base coach to hitting coach. General Manager Brian Sabean cautioned that the contracts for the coaches are still a work in progress.
Righetti, Wotus and Lefebvre apparently will be the only holdovers from the previous core staff. That means hitting coach Gene Clines and third-base coach Sonny Jackson are free to follow former manager Dusty Baker to the Chicago Cubs.
