2004 AUG 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Even though word has gone out to almost 20,000 health care providers that low-income pregnant immigrants can now get Medicaid prenatal care, the state says it worries the women won't take up the offer.
Julie Munsell, a spokeswoman for the state Human Services Department, said the department wanted health-care providers and women eligible for the service to be aware of the coverage.
She said official notice went out to 17,675 providers by mail and 1,466 providers by e-mail.
Because some immigrants may be hesitant to take advantage of the government assistance, she said, the department is working with the state Health Department, Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, and the Arkansas Catholic Diocese to get word to them.
"We're going to have to break through a stigma that was there long before us," she said. "We've employed the assistance of groups who have a lot of one-on-one contact" with the immigrant population.
