2004 AUG 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- An obesity article sparked the quest of Khurram Qadir, MD, to offer a new approach to weight management.
A gastroenterologist at University Hospitals in Iowa City, Qadir was enveloped in the world of digestive diseases until the Gastroenterology Journal article spurred him to action 2 years ago.
"As I read it, I realized how serious a problem (obesity) was," said Qadir, also an assistant University of Iowa professor.
Some cancers, diabetes and heart disease are among the health concerns associated with obesity, which has grown to epidemic proportions in the United States.
Qadir researched what it would take to help people lose weight and now heads the product of that effort: University of Iowa Weight Management.
A pilot project began last August. The clinic officially opened at the hospital July 1 and can see 30 to 40 new patients per month.
Qadir said the clinic differs from conventional weight-loss programs by offering a comprehensive, individualized approach, directed by doctors.
