2004 AUG 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- More than 1000 times a year, expectant parents receive a stunning diagnosis: a lung anomaly is threatening the health of their unborn child.
A serious birth defect, a lung lesion can compromise fetal lung growth and cause heart failure. Today, with accurate diagnosis and treatment, the vast majority of babies with lung lesions can go on to lead healthy lives.
But despite excellent outcomes, the defect is rare and successful treatment options are not widely understood in the medical community. Many parents are still being counseled to terminate the pregnancy when the lesion is discovered.
The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has developed a free DVD, "Breathing Easier: What Families and Physicians Should Know About Fetal Lung Lesions," to help raise awareness about fetal lung lesions and the cutting edge diagnostic technology and highly successful diagnostic and treatment options available.
The first educational tool of its kind, the DVD is designed to help medical professionals educate families coping with this difficult diagnosis, so they can make the best decision possible for their family.
