2004 AUG 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Hawaii Biotech, Inc., a Hawaii-based biopharmaceutical company, announced that in a second study its West Nile vaccine protected 100% of test animals from both illness and death when challenged with human West Nile virus.
In contrast, 53% of the control animals died, and survivors showed signs of illness.
The study was conducted by Dr. Robert B. Tesh, professor, department of pathology, Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, University of Texas Medical Branch. "The study results are promising and validate last year's study results of this subunit vaccine," said Tesh. "West Nile Virus has become a serious threat to human health in North America. Since the groups at highest risk for severe West Nile Virus illness are the elderly and the immune compromised, a noninfectious (subunit) vaccine would seem a better choice."
The study was conducted in a well-validated model of human West Nile disease, the golden hamster, developed at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and consisted of 5 groups of 15 animals each: 1 control group and 4 groups immunized with Hawaii Biotech proprietary vaccine formulations.
