Dec. 5--Thai Yamaha Motor Co plans a 1.5-billion-baht business expansion over the next three years to cater to rising demand overseas and at home, according to Praphan Phornthanavarsit, the company's executive vice-president.
The expansion would cost 500 million baht per year, beginning in 2003, and involves the installation of new machinery and an assembly line at its plant at Km 21 of the Bang Na-Trat Highway.
The upgrade would raise production capacity to 200,000 units next year from the existing 140,000 to serve domestic demand.
The expanded capacity would also help the company export motorcycles in kit form, which would be worth about 1.5 billion baht next year and would increase to five billion baht by 2005.
The products, mainly engines, will be shipped to Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam where demand is high.
Production capacity in 2004 and 2005 will be determined at a later date, depending on the actual demand abroad and at home.
