Nov. 15--Twenty-one Newark Liberty International Airport employees used fake Social Security and green cards to get jobs that gave them access to high-security areas, federal authorities charged Thursday.
All of the employees worked for private contractors in cleaning and security, and none had established ties to terrorist organizations, said U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie.
However, Christie said the arrests offer "an ounce of prevention."
"There are no guarantees that the next group of people won't have ties to terrorist organizations," he said during a news conference in Newark.
A months-long investigation, mirroring similar probes at other airports throughout the nation, examined the backgrounds of all 18,000 employees at Newark who have access to restricted areas around airplanes and baggage-handling facilities. Investigators looked for those who fraudulently obtained Social Security numbers, were working unlawfully in the country, or lied about criminal convictions.
Eleven of those charged were arrested early Thursday. The other 10 were being sought.
