Nov. 26--New York state has granted Rensselaer County's request for an Empire Zone, giving it the last slot in this round of designations and leaving just two Capital Region counties without one.
State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, announced the designation Monday. With it, companies that locate or expand inside the two-square-mile zone will receive near-tax-free status.
"The Empire Zone will give Rensselaer County a significant, proven economic development tool that will help ensure the growth of existing businesses and the attraction of new ones," Bruno said in a statement.
