Nov. 21--St. Louis University is leading a nationwide clinical trial of a new vaccine that could prevent genital herpes among women.
The Herpevac Trial for Women, announced Wednesday in St. Louis, could result in the first approval by the Food and Drug Administration of a vaccine for the incurable, sexually transmitted disease.
As many as one in four Americans older than 12 have genital herpes, but many people never show symptoms and spread the disease unknowingly.
"Any infected individual should be assumed a potential transmitter of the virus," said Dr. Thomas Heineman, a professor of internal medicine at SLU's School of Medicine.
Researchers expect the vaccine to be 75 percent effective in blocking genital herpes in women with no history of the virus.
"No vaccine is 100 percent effective," said Heineman.
