Nov. 21--American researchers have developed effective vaccines for two sexually transmitted viruses that afflict millions of men and women, raising hopes the vaccines could one day eradicate genital herpes and a viral infection linked to cervical cancer.
The news was hailed Wednesday by public-health experts and physicians, who say the vaccines could have profound effects in curbing these "silent" viruses that many people never know they have, but can cause cervical cancer and help foster the spread of AIDS.
Both of the still-experimental vaccines are now entering larger clinical trials. If the results are successful, each could be on the market in as little as five years.
In research published in today's New England Journal of Medicine, University of Washington researchers report the successful test of a vaccine against the most common form of the human papillomavirus, which is believed to cause cervical cancer.…
