The Chevrolet Malibu has been in the lineup for years, doing simply okay. But now the company is switching things around a bit. With the 2004 Malibu Maxx, released late last year, Chevy is trying to put a little juice into the midsize family-car market.
This all-new Maxx has an all-new look. Chevy calls it a five-door extended sedan (whatever that means), saying it combines the ride of a sedan with the versatility of a sport/ute. For simplicity's sake, we'll call it a wagon.
Our logbook remarks range from "It's ugly!'' to "I love it.'' And in between, we mostly agree on "quirky.''
We are unequivocal, though, in our praise for the Maxx's ride and handling characteristics. Owners, testers and Motor City staffers agree we like it-much to the surprise of many of us.
"Driving it is not so bad,'' one editor writes, while another says, "The ride-handling mix is good, with a firm-but not too firm-ride.''
We like that we are able to shift using a button on the side of the shift lever, allowing us to change gears up and down manually. "And it holds whichever gear you select, something other, more sophisticated transmissions don't allow you to do,'' we noted.
Owners concur with this assessment, praising the car's transmission and cruise control system.
