Byline: CURT CAVIN
The former runner-up in the open-wheel series we longingly remember as CART, Dario Franchitti has essentially been the overlooked driver at Andretti Green Racing. Finally, it was his day in the Indy Racing League.
After Michael Andretti, Kim Green and Kevin Savoree purchased Team Green at the end of the 2002 season, the focus was on Andretti's impending retirement. Then last season Tony Kanaan scored the team's first win at Phoenix and Bryan Herta sneaked in a fuel-mileage win at Kansas. This year Dan Wheldon won the all-important race in Japan for Honda.
All the while the focus on Franchitti was negative. People were surprised he moved to the IRL in 2003 in the first place, then they didn't expect him to return to Tony George's dangerous all-oval series this season following delicate back surgery (he fell off a motorcycle).
They surely didn't think he had the competitive drive to win a race, although he started making believers when he finished second at Texas Motor Speedway in June. It takes a stand-in-the-seat driver to do that, as smart folk know.
Each time an AGR driver went to victory lane, Franchitti went with him in support.
Sunday was his turn on the Milwaukee Mile at Wisconsin State Fair Park. When Franchitti held off Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice for the win in the Menards A.J. Foyt Indy 225 by 0.659 second, he was swarmed with congratulations from all sides of the 95-man AGR outfit.
