Xue Ronghua, 24, a shy and studious eldest child, grew up in the poorest county in one of China's poorest provinces, Jiangxi. But even there, his family is considered a charity case. Residents of his home village marvel at the shabbiness of the Xues' house, built from the native burnt-orange earth and more than 100 years old. Holes gape in the roof, the clay walls are crumbling, and there is no front door. It's not that the family didn't want to repair the old one, explains a neighbor.
