Dec. 6--Preparations for the controversial Thailand-Malaysia natural gas pipeline and gas separation plant have begun despite continuing opposition from conservationists and local residents in Songkhla.
PTT Plc, a partner in the 40-billion-baht project, had made a deal for a construction site covering approximately 800 rai, located 800 metres away from the original site in Chana district of Songkhla, said PTT president Viset Choopiban.
Further details of the land acquisition were not disclosed.
The gas pipeline will take gas from the Gulf of Thailand onshore to Songkhla and on to Kedah state in northern Malaysia.
Both Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Energy Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana have made it clear that the government intends to press ahead with the projects.
If local people remained opposed, the authorities concerned must continue their attempts to persuade residents of the project's benefits, Mr Viset quoted Mr Thaksin as saying.
