Dec. 4--An international calling-card firm has sued the Communications Authority of Thailand and demanded 1.9 billion baht in compensation for disconnecting the company after it failed to meet a two-day deadline for settling a 14-million-baht debt in cash.
Telecard Corporation said it had lost huge business opportunities that it would have expected from the 10-year concession after being forced to cease operations in July, just one year after its inception.
Ironically, the CAT is a partner in the Telecard venture, holding 26 percent in free shares, while Telemed Corp holds the remaining 74 percent.
The Justice Ministry's Arbitration Office has accepted Telecard's suit and agreed to begin the arbitration process. Under the arbitration process, each party will name an arbitrator to the three-member panel, with the ministry naming one person to sit as chairman.
Telecard's lawyer, Suprawat Jaisamut, said that the company was in addition considering a criminal complaint against the CAT for barring Telecard personnel from working on the agency's premises.
The CAT granted Telecard a 10-year concession to operate an international call service in February 2000.
