Dec. 3--Lampang is emerging as a production hub for world-class ceramic tableware under the ambitious cluster development project of the Industrial Finance Corporation of Thailand (IFCT).
About 300 ceramic producers in the province have been chosen for the country's first tangible industrial cluster, in a programme developed by the IFCT in co-operation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido).
IFCT president Anothai Techamontrikul said Lampang had the project aimed to develop the province as a contracting hub for world-class ceramic brands.
Currently, several producers in the province supply goods for world-class ceramic brands including Herman Dodge and Son of the United States, April Cornell of Europe and Whittard of the United Kingdom.
Ceramic products made in Lampang are expected to be worth five billion baht this year. Of the total, three billion baht in revenue will come from exports. The industry grew by 10 percent this year in volume and 5 percent in value, meaning that product prices have been squeezed due to hard bargaining by buyers.
The IFCT has earmarked nine million baht to develop the cluster, covering infrastructure, human resources, production and marketing management, and technology.
