Dec. 2--The government and private sector are working together to develop and market a Thai herbal extract, known as plai, as a new ingredient in international cosmetic and health products.
The consortium of universities, drug companies and the Innovation Development Fund, plans a roadshow in the Middle East and the United States to introduce plai extracts to the world.
The group aims to compete with tea tree oil, an active ingredient in cosmetic products marketed with the support of the Australian government.
It is urging the government to list plai as a national herb so comprehensive research and development can lead to sustainable product development.
The group has also set a long-term goal to develop plai products as medicines in the next 10 years.
Plai, scientifically known as zingiber cassumunar, has been used in Thai traditional treatments for more than 100 years to reduce swelling and pain.
