Dec. 1--Tim Miller of St. Paul stood in line an hour early for the 6 a.m. opening of J.C. Penney at Rosedale Center to get a free Walt Disney globe. Miller snared the complimentary gift and then bagged some discounted merchandise, too.
"There are a lot of good deals," said Miller, whose gift-buying included clothing and women's fragrances. At Rosedale Center, most storefronts touted sales with discounts of up to 50 percent.
Those kinds of sales got cash registers humming on a day when an estimated 35 percent of Americans said they planned to shop.
