Dec. 22--Faced with a projected budget deficit of roughly $1.57 million for fiscal year 2004, which begins July 1, Melrose Superintendent Rosemary LeBlanc-Considine has recommended closing the Decius Beebe Elementary School on the city's west side.
Closing the Beebe School, the city's smallest school, would save taxpayers about $500,000, LeBlanc-Considine told members of the School Committee Tuesday night, during the panel's first discussion of next year's budget. If the school is closed, the 227 students who are enrolled there would be sent to the city's five remaining elementary schools, she said.
