Dec. 22--If light rail is built along Independence Boulevard, Charlotte transit officials say they may ask the state to tear up a portion of the $17.6 million car-pool lane that was constructed a decade ago.
Even the portion of the center car-pool lane that's now under construction may be demolished because transit officials won't decide until 2005 whether light rail or a busway will be built on Independence -- after the current construction ends.
And costly changes to the design of the new Eastway Drive bridge that's now under construction may end up not being needed if light rail is built.
Faced with strong support of light rail by east-side neighborhoods, the Metropolitan Transit Commission voted in November to study the feasibility of a busway and light rail on Independence. Light rail would cost $414 million and a busway $154 million, both in current dollars.
